10 years ago, i was somewhat legal (cigarettes and voting, no alcohol or gambling).
10 years ago, i had just finished high school and was enjoying my summer immensely. swimming and tennis almost daily at vasey's parents' pad, beach time and bonfires at huntington beach with friends, relative freedom in my still-new civic.
10 years ago, i was getting ready to move to the opposite coast for college.
10 years ago, i was spiritually in a good place, because i was broken and uncertain about the future.
10 years ago, in some ways, i was more mature than i am today.
10 years ago, i was about to begin an amazing growth spurt. not physically, obviously.
10 years ago, i was getting used to the fact that my mom had married a grade A a-hole.
10 years ago, i was learning that being an adult means that you sometimes need to consider the impact of your actions/inaction and that you sometimes need to put the comfort and needs of those you love above your own. even if you were right. the right fact and making it known doesn't necessarily equal the right thing to do.
10 years ago, i was a socially awkward dork just starting to come out of my shell and learning how to love myself and be confident in myself.
10 years ago, i fell in love with a boy for the first time.

10 years ago today, the bear first initiated conversation with me.

10 years and one day ago, i saw him walk into the meeting late--the cutest guy at the conference for sure. he had the requisite spiky hair, baggy shorts, cool t-shirt, sk8er shoes, and eddie bauer backpack that all cool AZN boys back then rocked. 10 years and one day ago, he saw my name and address on the conference registration list before walking into the room in which he was the cutest. he thought, "cool! someone from my 'hood."

we didn't talk that night as he was busy as part of the young adult planning committee for this convocation for the "racial ethnic" people of our church denomination nationwide (sadly, like 5% of the denomination's membership). since it was the first day of the conference, there was a quick meeting and then rest/unpacking time for the rest of the night. i was with my friend A (of the A+K sisterly duo), and we were busy getting to know the other people around our age and exploring together.

so back to that first conversation. between scheduled meetings and activities, a few of us gathered in the game room of our hotel to just hang out. he approached me, saying he noticed i was from southern california, too. we played six degrees of asians-in-southern-california separation and found out we had a mutual acquaintance. he found out who my mom was and made the connection that she had worked with his parents on some regional, denominational things in the past. he had even spoken with her on the phone briefly--to ask who it was and then hand the phone over to his dad. then someone wanted to take a group picture. i gave the photographer my camera, too.

bear is center in the grey shirt.
i'm in front of him in the white tank.

after that conversation, we hung out together with the group as a whole. the group bonded pretty well over the course of that week, and i have some great memories of that sweaty time in orlando. the bear was quite the popular one and kept us all laughing. during that week, i noticed his sense of humor, his quick temper, his utter dedication to things that mattered to him that in turn revealed that temper, and how physically attractive he was to me. unfortunately, he seemed to be interested in another girl that week. she was more outgoing than i, so they talked more than the bear and i did. i would be lying if i said i wasn't a little bit jealous. i figured that the attraction was one-sided and to forget it in favor of friendship. after all, i was off to college, the pseudo-real world, and big things that were more important than boys.

on the last day of the conference, we compiled everyone's contact information. a few of us had AOL and added our screennames because we were just so young, tech-savvy, and hip (read: nerds) like that.

as soon as i got home, i logged onto AOL. yes, even then, i was already addicted to the internet. i hadn't checked my e-mail in over a week! OMG! my inbox was going to be flooded with hilarious and interesting forwards, memes, and even actual e-mail from my online and cool dorky real-life friends that had internet. i added my new friends' e-mail addresses to my address book and their screennames to my buddy list. as soon as i did, i saw the bear sign on.

we talked for hours that night. yes, on AOL. i literally LOLed more than i ever had in my history of chatting online to that point. at around 3 AM, we considered going to carrows to eat as both of us were starving. hey, it was the only thing open at that hour in our area. i vetoed the idea as my mom was pretty strict about me going out late at night, and i was a good sheltered kid. we instead made plans to have coffee sometime that coming week.

that was three weeks before i was heading cross-country for college. we saw each other about two to three times per week for those three weeks and quickly became very good friends. our first time "hanging out" (date) was at green burrito for dinner, then coffee and amazing conversation at starbucks. the conversation ranged from the hilarious to the serious. i even told him about my dad's death on that first date. we played tennis together. one day on my way home from a friend's, i randomly had the guts to drop by his place, so he, his friend, and i went to dinner together. we chatted online and on the phone almost every night for hours. for those three weeks and even longer, we lied to ourselves about being just good friends.

the night before i left for new york, he took me to santa monica. i had told him multiple times how much i was going to miss the beach and the warmth, so he made sure he took me before i left. when he dropped me off at home, he told me to wait--he had a gift for me. he knew that winnie the pooh was my favorite disney character from before i could say his name properly, and that i liked the classic pooh stuff better than the new. he got me a classic pooh address book and stationery set--so i could stay in touch with my friends at home better. so i could stay in touch with him better.

we told each other we'd miss each other. i promised i'd keep in touch, and besides, i'd have ethernet (high-speed internet! OMG! OMG!) in the dorms. i smiled. we hugged briefly but hard. then he vroomed off. no, he didn't drive off, he vroomed off. he had the loudest exhaust on his lowered civic, of course. i was going to miss feeling hotter than all import models in the world combined riding next to him in his fixed-up car, especially since he had taken the A/C out to make the car go faster. i slowly walked to the front door. the summer night was cool and crisp as desert nights tend to be, but my face wouldn't cool down and neither would the burning in my eyes.

my mom, potato bro, and i flew off to new york the next morning. we spent a week in an almost-abandoned ski resort on the shores of lake placid to have some family time before i was really off to school (yes it was totally creepy, but we survived without being murdered or haunted). i missed all of my friends at home dearly that week i was away from the internet and the phone, but i missed the one i had known the shortest time the most.

as soon as i got to school and had my phone and computer hooked up, the bear and i picked up our conversations where we had left off. except for that one, yet unspoken one neither of us had dared to broach--that despite how young we were and how brief our acquaintance was, we had both fallen in love.

9 years ago today, the bear came to my front door with a single red rose and asked me to be his girlfriend.* he told me he wanted to ask me on a special day. i had no idea what that special day was. he reminded me it was exactly one year since the first day we talked. he even wore the same shirt he had worn on that day. never mind we already had each others' hearts for a year already.

*we were still teens, k?!? give us a break!

takin' it back

for various reasons lately, i've been feeling a bit insecurrr despite the fact that the concept of school seems so securrr. ha. anyway, no worries. i should snap out of it soon. overall, i'm pretty secure in who i am and know myself, good and bad parts, pretty well. or so i like to think. however, yes, circumstances can get me down. i may come off quite confident or even overconfident most of the time, but man i promise i'm so self-conscious--that's why you always see me with at least one of my watches [or actually, one of weemo's watches, i should say.]

alright, enough with the kanye lyrics. last night, i was cleaning out my old photos/cards/letters/misc. sentimental crap boxes and came across some baby photos that made me feel a little bit better about myself. to be 100% objective, i wasn't the cutest baby. i looked like a boy, i had crazy, crazy hair, hardly any nose, and small eyes. my saving grace? i was F-A-T FAT FAT FAT! the most comforting thing about these photos? seeing that some things, namely who i am, never change. yes, i age and grow, but who i am is who i am. and there's always room for even more growth and change, hopefully of the good variety. yeah, i don't know what i'm blabbering about, either. here's some photographic evidence.

some of my favorite things then AND now:
sleep.
doesn't matter where.

silence/blocking out unnecessary noise.

myself.

eating.
even when i don't have teeth.

waiting to be fed.

eating some more.

since we're takin' it back, i thought i'd scan these before tossing 'em in the recycling bin. they were postcards from the local 7-eleven in korea that my brother and i would visit almost daily with our cousins back when we visited in around 1992, i think.
please don't ask me about their fashion and coiffure choices. i have no answers. i have no words, even, when looking at these. well, they did somehow revolutionze k-pop despite (because of?) those choices.

oh, and please please say my baby face is cuter than seo taiji's baby face. like i said, i wasn't that cute, but look at those cheeks! cheeks!!! after all, i am feeling insecure. boost my self-confidence, if you so desire. ;)

mememememe

some of my studiomates have started calling me by my college studio nickname. it's in the vein of j.lo and involves my maiden name. and sounds dirty but isn't. *swoon*

some have also started calling me tater and other versions of potato. yay.

i wish i could be as uncompromising as this year's pritzker prize (the nobel prize equivalent in architecture) laureate peter zumthor. go phenomenologists! i've admired his work and philosophy for a long time now. similarly, i admire glenn murcutt, another pritzker prize winner. they both are very selective about which commissions they take on. mr. murcutt only takes on one at a time so he can devote himself fully to it. they are both uber sensitive to a project's specific context, program, and demands. both handle materials beautifully and in a masterly way. both create spaces that transport you.

i don't even want a pritzker prize. i know i don't have the natural talent required. nor the uncompromising commitment to a certain way and philosophy of practice. i'm just afraid i'm too much of a pragmatist, too much of a functionalist, too much of a rationalist, too much of an american, to ever practice at the honest level they do and like they do and produce spaces like theirs.

i need to draw for fun again this summer. and get back into sketching.

back to reading. see you all after the reading is done and the studio cleaned out.

do you know what time it is?

i don't. my every day watch battery died. and the strap is all worn out. let's just say it started as bright red leather, and now it's...deep burgundy. my nicer but still casual metal band watch's clasp is all loose, so it goes flying randomly if i fling the arms too much. and i do a lot of arm-waving, especially when presenting. and i'm doing a lot of presenting these days.

i need a fun every day watch. this one's cute although a bit too girly and chunky.

hint hint, santa. too bad santa's broke this year.

this is not a meme

really, it's not. i just feel like sharing random crap about me. because as we all know, the world totally revolves around me. or something like that.

  • while i understand that blogs are about NOWthelatest and thus the most recent entry must be up top, it makes reading a-recently-discovered-new-to-me-but-been-around-awhile blog from beginning to now quite frustrating. you scroll to the bottom of an archived month. then you have to scroll to the top of that entry. then you read it and end up at the bottom of the page. then you have to scroll up to the top of the entry before that, possibly missing it if the headers aren't that obvious. then your scrolling finger gets so tired you start using the whole length of your arm from wrist to elbow to do the copious amounts of scrolling. oh wait, you don't do that? sorry, i guess it's just me.
  • i really can't whistle. the bear and i worked on this last weekend for a bit. it even involved me getting a little light-headed while blowing air through my pursed lips really hard to eke out some semblance of "whistle" while walking through south coast plaza. we've been working on this off and on for about 8 years now (mostly off). i think it may be time to throw in the towel despite the fact i got a less airy/breathy sound out finally.
  • along with our watch tans, the bear and i both now have ring tans. this makes me way too giddy. tee hee.
  • i read really really really fast. well, only things that are fun to read. for example, i typically read fun novels within a day. i just can't stop reading. i'm not the type that wants to save some for later. i want it all. NOW. (so a child of instant-gratification-seeking, entitled-to-everything-feeling gen Y). too bad this doesn't apply to educational reading. i've been reading skimming this for about a month now. while trying to read that, i've also read half a cookbook, parts of something else educational that i'm actually very interested in but still can't get through, multiple people magazines, twenty billion blog entries, daily devotionals almost daily, and a couple of real simple magazines.
  • i teared up just right now while watching this:

because the world really doesn't revolve around me (thank goodness). the footage at the DMZ and in alhambra, ca particularly struck a chord with me for personal reasons. on the other hand, the places i haven't been made me smile the biggest.

ETA: stride is my favorite gum. it really does last ridiculously long. i am so glad costco now carries it so i don't have to go to smart&final just to buy gum in bulk. i can now pick it up with my toilet paper.

meme + my favorite thing [food] = YUM

the fabulous i.j tagged me for this food meme, so here goes!

what were you cooking/baking ten years ago?
cooking - nothing. i was still in high school and living at home. i guess i'm still a baby after all.

baking - i got a recipe for julia child's buche de noel from my french class. we ate and studied the cuisine more than we learned the language in that class - totally my kind of class. anyway, i attempted the whole thing from scratch including frosting, decorations, and all. i did not do the spun sugar, though. watching julia child make a mess of it is comedy, though. i highly recommend you watch this classic. the results looked half decent and were way too sweet. oh! and i also got extra credit in my french class for making it. i was also making classic choux pastry filled with yummy custard (cream puffs). those looked pretty bad but were tasty! koreans like shoe kheu-reem (choux creme), so my mom + friends ate all of those up. i wish i still had time to tackle projects like this. too bad i never feel like eating my creations once done. better for the potato jelly belly, i guess.

what were you cooking/baking one year ago?
cooking - nothing. my roommates made dinner and sometimes lunch for me every weeknight.

baking - pumpkin pies using my secret twist on the libby's recipe in frozen pie crusts. yes, i've regressed since 10 years ago. i was also living very close to pinkberry, beard papa's, and quite a few yummy desserteries, so i figured my time was more valuable than the few bucks here and there i spent on sweet indulgences.

the snack you enjoy the most:
fresh tortilla chips and salsa from our super secret carniceria in orange county.

a culinary luxury you would indulge in if you were a millionaire:
you know those culinary vacations where you spend like a month in tuscany learning the cuisine and using the freshest ingredients from the source? i'd do those once or twice a year and go all over the globe. i might need to be a multi multi millionaire or billionaire to have enough peace of mind to spend like that and take that much time off, though.

what do you bake the most?
cookies. the already scored ones from nestle in the refrigerated section. in my toaster oven.

one thing you cannot/will not eat:
i can't drink too much milk.
there is very little i will not eat. the fish intestine egg custard thing i had in hong kong wasn't so great, and i probably would not eat it again.

favorite culinary toy:
i love our new wustof knives and cuisinart griddler.

a must on your “last meal” menu:
this is the hardest question ever. potatoes done every which way - fries, mashed, sweet potato fries, new potatoes roasted with rosemary, baked, twice baked, scalloped, au gratin, latkes. a cheese plate. really good, fresh bread. something involving dark chocolate. a fresh fruit tart.

five recipes you know by heart:
  1. my mom's kalbi marinade (korean short rib bbq)
  2. my mom's japchae (vermicelli glass noodles with meat, veggies, and yummy seasoning)
  3. how long to keep trader joe's orange chicken in the oven and its sauce in the microwave.
  4. how long to cook most korean ramens and sapporo ichiban.
  5. white rice both a rice cooker and the stovetop method.
happy food memories:
  1. late night d.p. dough deliveries. the best calzones with an amazing array of fresh fillings for upstate new york. there are so many fun, bonding memories over these calzones with lots of awesome people.
  2. eating (and eating and eating and eating some more) at dining halls in college whose menus included recipes originally made on-campus and written by world-renowned chefs like emeril. seriously, our dining halls' food was so, so yummy.
  3. having access to an amazing wegman's for late night studio food runs. it was like whole foods, before they cropped up everywhere. there was a see's candy cart, amazing bulk candy aisle, fresh pasta station (pick your toppings, seasonings, sauce, noodle, and they cook it up for your right there), amazing cheese bar (where i sample cheese with truffles, humboldt fog, manchego, and many others for the first time), really good sandwich bar (16-incher, anyone?), tasty olive + fresh hummus bar, the butcher would season and cook any cut of meat you bought for no more than the cost of the meat itself, etc., etc.
  4. once in awhile, on rainy days, my mom would pick us up from school (a very rare occurrence) and treat us to in-n-out on the way home.
  5. my mom's miyuk gook (seaweed soup) on our birthdays. she uses a seafood broth that she makes from scratch so that it's less fatty and much cleaner tasting than the beef-broth based ones. it's a tradition to eat this on your birthday.
  6. helping my grandmas hand make mandoo (dumplings/gyoza/potstickers) on those rare winters they would be visiting us in the states, in the few days before the new year. they would dispense life advice, relating it to the food advice also being dispensed. i learned a lot from watching their hands and listening to them.
  7. celebrating our engagement over amazing steaks.

i tag winnie, cee, obsessedwithpink, weatherjen, and candy&sushi. happy eating!

4 x 8

Four jobs I have had in my life:
1. Web designer. I only know very basic HTML, and barely the basics of Dreamweaver/Go Live/FrontPage. Go figure.
2. Data entry for a survey of 9/11 firefighters.
3. Office b*tch. I've had a few of these types of jobs, but the best was when I was a temp who happened to be covering for the office manager (6 week vacation), receptionist (quit very soon after i was hired), word processor (6 week medical leave), accounts payable (also quit around the time i was hired), and data entry person (had a baby and was on indefinite maternity leave) all at once for a medium-sized company.
4. IT guy. I helped move eMachines' offices once upon a time. I carried huge monitors and re-attached peoples' peripherals to their computers.

Four movies I can watch over and over and over:
1. Sabrina [the Audrey Hepburn version]
2. Love Actually
3. Tie between Clueless and Legally Blonde
4. The Usual Suspects

Four TV shows I like to watch:
1. Entourage
2. 24
3. Top Chef
4. The Office

Four places I have vacationed:
1. Sint Maarten/Saint Martin
2. Australia
3. Hong Kong
4. Western Canada

Four of my favorite dishes:
1. Chocolate
2. Spicy lad nah
3. Anything involving garlic + potatoes.
4. Gye jjigae [crab stew/casserole/hot pot]. You have to use a female crab for this one.

Four websites I visit daily:
1. Gmail
2. Yahoo!Mail
3. Hotmail
4. Bloglines

Four places I would rather be:
1. In bed.
2. Eating excellent gnocchi in an outdoor living room in Napa with a good glass of wine.
3. Putting the last of the laundry away. Because that would mean I have clothes to wear, without having wasted time actually doing laundry.
4. In a hammock in some beachy place I have yet to visit - Tahiti, Bora Bora, Costa Rica, Canary Islands, Turks & Caicos, Thailand, the list goes on...

Four bloggers I am tagging:
1. A Hag with a Big Bag. Because I want to jump in her big bag and eat where she does.
2. weatherjen. We both braved Upstate New York, although at different times.
3. Confessions of the Pink Obsessed. Because I can now see her blog in its full, pink glory thanks to my new monitor cable.
4. Confessions of a Wifezilla. Because she kills plants almost as quickly as I do.

not feeling like myself

i'm feeling like the collegiate version of potato. "what characterizes collegiate potato?" you ask? well, i was rather grumpy due to sleep deprivation, lack of time management, being pulled in too many directions, being confused about my priorities, and wanting to do too much thus spreading myself too thin.

i am tired. i am run down. i am grumpy. i am short-tempered. i lack patience. i am being anti-social as a result but at the same time bemoaning how disconnected i feel. i start being even more tactless than usual. all consideration for others goes out the window, despite the fact that "normal" potato is actually rather considerate of others, down-to-earth, and fun. i cannot get things done. i am usually a pro at knocking stuff off of a list rapid-fire. not so much now. i have multiple lists miles long documenting each part of my life. not even the simplest, which can be taken care of with a phone call, are getting done. i know it's ok. there are times in life when this happens. yet i can't give myself a break.

after a stupid argument that ended with me stupidly stomping off to bed a few days ago, the bear broke through my foul, bratty mood after i sulked in bed for a few minutes. "you're stressed, i can tell. you've been grinding your teeth at night a lot." great. hopefully not too much damage is done before my dentist appointment next month.

i really have very little to complain about in life. i have a job where i get along with everyone well/am paid fairly/am good at what i do/still have room for growth, the sweetest husband, and great friends and family. also, i don't have that much on my plate compared to many. no kids and no huge responsibilities or obligations. sadly, i am learning that all the learning and character development that i thought had occurred mostly within the last handful of years didn't happen. i'm still the base, spoiled five-year old who gets cranky and stressed out when she doesn't get her way and when changes she thinks she won't like (but probably will love once it's all said and done) are imminent. i've been relying much too much on me, him, and not Him.

too.much.text. i know. it's ok if no one reads it. end angst-y rant.
