in tenth grade, our composition teacher made us memorize poetry. it's one of the few things he still remembers from high school to this day, he told us. then he proceeded to recite one of them. word for word.
i don't remember any of the poems we memorized. just the subject matter, vaguely. a walt whitman about the wall neighbors rebuild every spring between them, one about the assassination of president lincoln ("oh captain, my captain," i think it was), another about king ozymandius, the wiliam carlos williams one about the red wheelbarrow. see? famous poetry. i can't even remember the poets or the titles for most. i could google, but i don't.
at emo times in my life, i remember memorizing the poems (although not the poetry itself) and wish i still read poetry. concise, simple, powerful, evocative. the way i want the things i create to be.
too bad i am wordy and complicated.

hot hot bored
haven't done a recap proper in awhile. too hot to write complete sentences. too hot to study, but last midterm is tuesday. i just need to pass in order to be exempt from taking the final but unfortunately don't know how to study for a C. the heat this weekend may have caused the potato brain to be lazy and only absorb enough information for a C anyway. this weekend wasn't that thrilling nor is it truly deserving of a recap, but i need to procrastinate a tiny bit more.
friday:
tomorrow is a d-day of sorts. wish me luck.
friday:
- work at home in the heat. we don't have A/C in the home office part of our home.
- get pretty for a night out for ex-househusband's (as in my former roommate who used to cook me and his girlfriend/my other roommate dinner every night) birthday.
- arrive at a booth househusband + teacher friends have been occupying since 3 PM, shortly before the laker game starts. note to self: become a teacher. maybe.
- consume sliders, fries, calamari, and firecracker wings at yardhouse in pasadena. i should have gotten those dang garlic noodles. pace two goblets of lindemann's lambic framboise and one blue moon with orange very nicely. isotonic beer keeps me cool and quenched during the game. sweetness lingers on my tongue throughout the night. asian glow does not occur. head does not hurt. bear yells at a host who is rooting for the jazz late in the game. lakers win!!! take that, bandwagon host that wasn't rooting for anyone when the lakers were up by almost 20.
- chill at e11even's and ex-househusband's place. rock band, bomberman on DS, and frisbee (yeah for real, not a video game) are played and/or watched. the boys catch up. e11even and i hydrate like mad since we're sweating even at that hour of the night.
- have intellectually stimulating conversation with the bear, regarding my area of study/work/interest, at 3 AM. goodness, i love that man.
- sleep in. sweet, sweet sleep.
- attempt to study all day. too hot.
- bear leaves for another friend's, bumblebeetuna's, birthday. i change into cute summer skirt and tank then leave for starbucks (boo!) so i can buy me some A/C for $5 or so.
- i give starbucks some money in exchange for blech cold drink.
- i freeze. even though i brought a lightweight hoodie.
- i give starbucks some money in exchange for a blech hot drink, since i know it will still be sweltering at the potatobear lair. i sip it and pretend to study until the sun goes down.
- home again, home again. more studying. bed at a decent hour. yay. thrilling. whoo.
- sleep in. again. this heat makes me la. zy.
- spend quiet moments before the bear is up eating breakfast, reading, and meditating. very sweet.
- madly clean and try to cool down house before masculine metro comes by to interview bear for some MBA project he's working on.
- "study" some more while MM and bear talk/interview/play video games/drink cool drinks.
- make this for dinner despite the fact that ice cubes would do. so easy. so quick. halved the sugar but still too sweet. maybe just use one-quarter next time. mirin is already sweet as it is. basically tastes like/is teriyaki. ate it too fast to photograph it. realized i know too little about nigella to either love or hate her, as it seems most of the world does.
- study 'til i drop. due to heatstroke.
tomorrow is a d-day of sorts. wish me luck.

remember
lately
i've lately been having weird, jumbled thoughts about things past despite the fact that i am in such a lazy state that i can't help but only think of the present. this is not because living in the moment is awesomeness (and that it is) but because just being (thoughtlessly) now is easier than remembering the past, good things included, or thinking about the future. if they were more coherent thoughts that weren't randomly interjected into my everyday ones, i'd share. it's mostly thoughts about family and specific events having to do with them--my dad, my ex-stepdad, the formative days of potatobear, my grandfather...OK so maybe it's just the men. weird. i just realized while typing that out.
back in the day remember if you give a mouse a cookie? well, the cupcakes have invaded even that. not that i have any issues with cupcakes. i might even go buy that book. for um, our future kids that we currently don't even know if we're planning for. um yeah.
a few weekends ago
here are a few shots from our fabulous girls' weekend in san diego i finally pulled off my half-dead camera. oh yeah, the camera hates me. it behaves again when the bear drops it, but not when i do. wtf?!?
anyway, first, the filipinos + some random kid.
while everyone else was oohing and ahhing over this from the marriott rooftop,
i was silently more taken by the graphic effect of the different types and color temperatures of lighting in the uncovered (lights made for fog) vs. covered parts of the neighboring parking garage.

yes, feel free to completely ignore those last dorky photos.
yeah, that's about all worth pulling off. sad. well, i knew we had quite a few more-talented-than-me stalkerazzi in our midst, so i took the lazy route.
to remember for later
i saw this while out and about today. i had to snap a pic since it was shouting my name. literally.

waiting is exhausting.
so let go, let go, jump in . . .
. . . 'cause there's beauty in the breakdown.
so much to see, eat, visit, do, smell, taste, experience in this life, it seems. never enough time or money. and even if there was enough time and money, it still wouldn't be enough. this life will always leave me longing for more.
the words of switchfoot, the Bible, and william carlos williams' the red wheelbarrow are swirling about inside my head and poking different parts of my innards these days. random mix, i know.
rain makes me into one moody, crazy girl.

- so much depends
upon
- a red wheel
barrow
- glazed with rain
water
- beside the white
chickens.
rain makes me into one moody, crazy girl.

almost christmas, not quite
before i speak of our nice, long weekend away, some random thoughts:
[i]
the hairs when not touched by professional hands, let down to to dry naturally, and dabbed with a little bit of product.
1. i need to be more heavy handed with the product. this is bordering on ajumah poof [this is really the best definition/translation i could find online. someone needs to write a better one!], and we can't have that when i haven't even hit thirty yet.
2. if the hair is curled, the downward-pointing lashes should most definitely also be curled. heck, those lashes should be curled every day.
3. the length is aiite for my natural hair texture. it looks much better when flat ironed. this lazy potato is a bit saddened. if only i had wash 'n' go hair, since i usually treat it like that anyway.
[ii]
888. the number of entries on my google reader waiting to be read when i returned from a mere three days away from internet access. i know some would think this a rather lucky number of entries, but it's a bit overwhelming. luckily, a couple hundred were from my news feeds, which i promptly clicked "mark as read."
i found complimentary internet access in the hotel lobby on our last morning there.
[iii]
i have not read for pleasure in, oh, um...oh heck, i can't even remember the last time. i couldn't find a magazine that peaked my interest at the airport, so i picked up a paperback instead. syrie james' the lost memoirs of jane austen is definitely a quick, fun read if you're a jane austen fan.
the premise is that jane austen's long, lost memoirs have been found and edited into this volume (when in fact it is all fiction). the author's style mimics austen's well enough, and more importantly, it's the first book/movie/work of full or partial fiction in a long, long while that has made me suspend disbelief, as i believe any good work of art should, so fully. the author also rather skillfully intertwines austen's true whereabouts in certain years, her supposed experiences at the time, and how those influenced, informed, and appeared in austen's novels. i guess the girly girl in me, who has been so lucky as to have experienced being romanced and is experiencing a marriage based on love, truly hopes deep down that she also was able to experience such a thing in real life and not just through observation and creation of characters. after reading this book, i want to go back and re-read all of her novels again.
this is probably the last "for fun" book review you'll get from me for a long time.
[iv]
i came home all motivated to clean things up, wrap up the last of the gifts, write a few last cards, get the laundry done, catch up on blogs/bills/email/facebook/messageboards, finish our parent albums which we are giving them as part of their gifts, deadfile bills that are past 7 years old (yes, i'm that crazy anal), gather up donations and load them in my car so i can give them before year's end, put some more ornaments on our poor three that still only has three on its branches, and other thrilling miscellany. however, i instead got sucked into the internets where reading an email here and a blog there has gotten me into a pensive, think-too-much, melancholy mood. i know! it's christmas! chin up, potato! but that also means it's year end, and this year is ending much too quickly without enough room nor time to think. maybe i should stop blogging and find some alone time.
anyway, without thinking, i know this year has been a blessed one, the next two days will be filled with fun, some more family time (as if this weekend wasn't enough already ;)), hopefully some reflection on why i celebrate, and tons o' food. i wish you all a happy holiday and hopefully some rest from work as well!
