then i got home, and the bear snubbed me for GTA IV. boys and their violent video games.
normally, i'd veg at my computer then collapse into bed. instead, i printed this recipe, courtesy of matt armendariz (whose blog is quite funny and beautiful) via design*sponge, i've been wanting to try. i have been trying to find new veggies for us to try as we don't eat enough of them (mostly because they go bad faster that we eat them), and beet greens sounded interesting as we both like dark, green, leafy, bitter-ish veggies. plus i'm a beet fan although the bear is not.
oh, and i popped a burrito in the microwave then topped it with the bear's ultra-hot fresh salsa (he put a full habanero AND jalapeno into a batch that only had 3 tomatoes, capsaicin-full seeds and all). i scarfed it, then returned to chop chop chopping. it was pretty dang good, and my spirits lifted a bit.
since i'm not a food stylist nor do i take anything near good photos with my camera that needs to be dropped in order to work, i didn't photograph my handiwork. BUT...it was really, really good. warm, hearty, savory, flavorful. the greens weren't too bitter at all, as greens go. the polenta was alright and a good complement to the beet greens, but we decided next time we could do without. it'd be a good side next to some meat or even on white rice. sigh, us and our white rice. i subbed red onion for the shallot, powdered sugar for the granulated (who has organic brown sugar and powdered sugar but no granulated sugar in her pantry? apparently, me), and rice vinegar for the cider vinegar. there i go with the rice again.
the bear loved it. wonderful...i like making his tummy happy. my stomach and tastebuds loved it, and i felt even better than i did after the burrito. all warm and full inside. victory! too bad we ate it around 10 PM. maybe next week i'll start running again. maybe.
now beet it! [har har]
